Alliance Update: Pediatric dose for Chagas disease treatment approved in Brazil

December 2011

In early December, Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency approved the registration of the new pediatric dosage form of the Chagas disease drug benznidazole, developed through a partnership between the Pernambuco State Pharmaceutical Laboratory (LAFEPE) of Brazil and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi). 4th Sector Health and DNDi formed an alliance earlier this year to support access to pediatric benznidazole, with 4th Sector Health supporting the development of an information, education and communication toolkit to inform and assist health practitioners and patients’ caretakers on the administration of the new drug dosage. The registration of pediatric benznidazole marks a key milestone in DNDi’s efforts to expand access to Chagas disease treatment.
