Project Hope Completes Pilot Introduction of “Una Prueba de Amor” in Mexico and Nicaragua to Raise Awareness of Gestational Diabetes

December 2011

Project Hope completed its pilot introduction of a new module, called “Una Prueba de Amor,” in Mexico and Nicaragua—designed to increase access to education and care for pregnant women about the importance of timely diagnosis and care for diabetes, pre-diabetes, and gestational diabetes.  Building upon support from both Bristol Myers-Squibb and Johnson & Johnson, the module provides a series of practical tools to be used by health workers to promote education and screening of pregnant women.  In total, the initiative trained 57 healthcare providers in the modules in Mexico and Nicaragua in health centers reaching over 150,000 area residents per year.  During the pilot introduction, 186 women were screened for gestational diabetes.  In addition, healthcare providers were sensitized on the importance of gestational diabetes and introduced to practical approaches and tools for integrated counseling and screening of pregnant women.  Project Hope is working with health centers and local governments to scale up introduction of the module as well as identify additional corporate support for further expansion.
